The Dehumanizing Effects of War ( A Research on a Poem Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen)

 

In 'Dulce et Decorum Est' Wilfred Owen abandons the traditional view that maintains the war is waged by great men. He believes that soldiers are not heroes. Soldiers are dehumanized to the level of beggars. They are boys; they have no experience of war. Soldiers are helpless, they suffer a lot. Owen tries to convince his readers that it is neither sweet nor honorable to die for your country by using the rhetorical triangle approach, which is based on three elements: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos.

One of the three elements of rhetorical triangle that Owen uses in his poem is ethos. Owen is considered as a reliable writer because ethos refers to the authenticity of the author. In the poem, ethos comes from the fact that he was a soldier; he participated in the First World War. That's why; he was able to provide a reveal description of the conditions of the men involved in the war. In his poem, Owen asserts that soldiers are extremely tired as they were old beggars carrying sacks on their backs. Owen provides his readers with such descriptions because of his experience. He also mentions how soldiers are not prepared for the battle, soldiers suffer and die. He describes how these soldiers are bleeding because they've lost their boats.

The way Owen describes the soldier's suffer during the war leads the audience to sympathize with him. War in epic poetry is considered romantic. But, in this poem war is something horrible that wants to kill you. This poem has an anti-romantic view of war. Soldiers are not heroes, they are merely beggars. Death is upon those soldiers, it surrounds  them. The poisonous gas, bleeding, gunshot, and bombs, those are the main elements of death that controls the battle field.

As the poem ends, Owen comes to the conclusion that the old saying 'Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori' is a lie. In reality, war is horrible and terrifying and it's something bad to start w war and to enter in it, and the people should stop telling themselves and their children that it's great and honorable to die for your country. 

Changing Habits

 People need to change their habits to save their health, whether they they want to quit smoking, eat better or take some other habit breaking or habit making. Starting a new habit means to start a new date to change and put rules to your new life. If your goal is weight loss for example, you should eat better and improve physical fitness. Some people use the treadmill in a wrong way, that may tend to physical injury or sometimes to stop using the treadmill. To success in your new habits, you should carry an index card that reflect in a good way on your life. If you want to stop smoking, get ride of every kind of smoking and the things that related to it, then save money and buy another things that are better for your health. To sum up, set a goal and don't give up until you achieve it, and if you success in your new habits, you should keep down on your schedule. 

Somethings that we can do this year, and we were not able to do a year ago

 There are many things that we can do today that we can not do a year ago with the students and as will as inside the schools. They were not able to achieve the required success, for this reason, the teacher's effort was doubled this year by intensive lessons and reviewing all the lessons that explained in the last year. But on the other hand, we can look at the positive side of the subject. Through distance learning, teachers and students were able to introduce technology into school and social life and more effectively, which positively affected the students and saved them and the teachers more effort and time.

Challenges you face when learning/teaching online

 The Covid -19  pandemic has shaken the education sector around the world.Classes have been suspended to enforce social distancing and educational institutions, from schools to universities, have changed to online teaching and assessment methods. However, there is no certainty as to when normalcy will be restored. This has encouraged a sort of permanent  inclination, if not a complete shift, towards online education. The online survey conducted by learning spiral showed that while children face issues in accessing education digitally, teachers face issues in delivering education through digital mediums. In addition to the technological challenges, various other obstacles encountered during online classes have been understanding the etiquette of online classes, parents hanging out in online class is a problem, maintaining online discipline is difficult, etc. Teachers mainly face challenges such as lack of IT support, ever-changing technology, unequal access for all students, software not optimized for mobile devices, and security concerns.

Problems that students face in online work and how to avoid it

 During online classes, students face lot of problems, and we as teachers should help them how to avoid these problems, some of these problems that confront students are: technical issues, computer challenges, online learning challenges, time management problems...etc. To avoid these problems you have to follow many steps, for example, you just need to find a high-speed internet connection at your home to resolve the internet connection problem in the class. And know where you can get technical support for your connection and other technical issues related to software and tools for effective learning. Also, students should be provided access to support devices that can help them solve technical problems via call, email or chat. You should pay attention to your instructor during the process of solving the issues. In addition to that, and to get better learning outcomes, it is important to understand the learning styles. You can learn through interaction, visual presentations, audio classes or written notes. To sum up, to learn and work better in your online classes, should solve all your problems to get the amazing results.

How to be a digital citizen

 A good digital citizen protects their personal information, uses good judgment and treats others with respect. Whether you're posting on social media, sending an email or commenting on an online discussion, practicing good digital citizenship makes our online world a more welcoming place everywhere.Digital citizenship is about confident and positive engagement with digital technologies. By educating students about digital citizenship, they will have the opportunity to develop an understanding throughout several concepts, digital and information literacy, internet safety, privacy and security, good relationship etiquette and communication, and digital footprint.

Tools that can be used in online assessment

 Distance learning is an innovative situation from two years ago to this day during the existence of the corona phenomenon, and for the success of this process, it is necessary to rely on tools and programs that are suitable for distance leaning. There are more than one program that can be used in distance learning, some of the best programs that can be used are: zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom,... and others. Through these applications, the teacher is able to explain the lesson as if he is inside the class. So, he can see his/her students through video calls, as if he/she is inside a really class. Also, the teacher can use the applications to assess the students and do exams though them. There are other tools also the teacher can use them in the online teaching, for example: Wordwall, Jamboard, Google forms, Google slides, Mentimeter,... etc.

My opinion about integrating technology into teaching

 In the past, studying was very difficult or impossible sometimes due to the few factors of technology. Today, with the availability of technology and social media, education has become much easier than it was in the past. The involvement of technology in the educational field has made the educational process much easier for teachers and students. For examples, technology has helped students to do many researches in easy and simple ways and without going anywhere. On the other hand, technology has helped teachers to teach and prepare better and in less time. Today, the entry of technology into education is the main factor for learning, and in light of the existence of the corona phenomenon, distance education has become the method used in all schools and universities around the world. In other words, technology has been the main factor in completing the educational curricula in the past two years and this year. 

EDUC561 Class

 The technology class is one of the best and most important courses that took place this semester. Through this course, we can introduce technology into our classrooms as educators. Through this class, we can teach students the latest methods with minimal effort and time. this course changed our view of the curriculum in general, because it facilitated the educational process for teachers as will as for students. It helped teachers to prepare lessons and save time, and also helped students to learn more about new technologies to benefit from them in their daily lives, and at a later time in their careers.
